EFA Advocacy Updates

New Partnership

For over a century, Australia has led the world in building a robust democracy. We were among the first nations to offer women the vote. We pioneered the secret ballot. Our elections are free and fair.

The foundations of our democratic system are the envy of the world. But to keep it that way, we need to be clear about the real risks our democracy is facing.

Our advertising and electoral laws have not kept pace with changing trends in digital media and public debate. There is undue influence pressuring decision-makers, and deception infiltrating our politics. Our public debate is too often divisive and self-serving, and Australians are losing trust in the institutions we rely on to safeguard our democracy.

That is why we have joined the Democracy Counts campaign.

Democracy Counts is a growing alliance of organisations and Australians who care about the way democracy functions in Australia. The campaign is powered by McKinnon, an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to better governments for a stronger Australia.

EFA has joined Democracy Counts as there is strong alignment between our two organisations – we have shared values, principles and strong alignment with EFA’s organisational rules and constitution, with a specific focus on digital civics education, public interest journalism, better transparency from government and stronger regulation of AI, social media and BigTech platforms.

We are also in good company. Other supporters include: Digital Rights Watch, the Centre for Public Integrity, Australian Internet Governance Forum, Community Broadcasters Association Australia, FORE Good, Human Rights Law Centre and Justice Connect.

If you also want to be counted in to protect Australia’s democracy, add your name at www.democracycounts.org.au.
