Our Statement of Solidarity With The People of Nepal

Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal following the government’s decision to block access to major social media platforms on 05 September 2025. This action, taken under the guise of maintaining public order, is in response to protests organised by local activists highlighting  government corruption and also its authoritarian approach to regulating social media platforms. To date, 19 protesters have been killed and over a hundred injured, including many school children and young people. This violent and disproportional  response to a lawful public protest by the Nepali government is a dangerous blow to fundamental human rights and a chilling example of digital repression.

A Threat to Digital Rights and Freedom of Expression

The right to access information and communicate freely is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy. We believe that human rights extend to the digital realm, and the Nepali government’s ban on social media platforms is a direct violation of these rights. By restricting access to platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and many others, the government is not only impeding communication but also silencing dissent and limiting the ability of citizens to engage in political discourse.

The Critical Role of Social Media for Young and Vulnerable Populations

For many, especially young people, social media is more than just a form of entertainment; it is a vital lifeline. It is a space where Generation Z and other young people organize, share information, and voice their genuine frustrations with issues like corruption and government overreach.

For LGBTQi and other vulnerable populations, social media provides a crucial platform for community building, support, and advocacy. In societies like Nepal where they may face marginalization or discrimination, these digital spaces are essential for finding a sense of belonging, accessing vital resources, and connecting with others who share their experiences. The ban on these platforms isolates these communities, making them even more vulnerable.

EFA condemns the Nepal Government’s authoritarian decision to ban social network platforms. This move is a blatant attack on fundamental freedoms, including the right to freedom of expression, access to information, association, and participation in digital spaces. It reflects a dangerous attempt by the state to control dissent, silence critical voices, and restrict civic space. This move is particularly concerning given the ongoing protests and the reported casualties. It demonstrates a government that fears the power of an informed and connected populace, and it echoes authoritarian tactics seen around the world. We urge the Nepali government to reverse this ban immediately and to ensure that any social media law they introduce respects the fundamental human and digital rights of its citizens.

EFA stands with the people of Nepal in their fight for a free and open digital future.
